Authorship of Books

Kenya Literature Bureau handles two categories of authors, namely, commissioned and non-commissioned authors.

  • Commissioned Authors
These are authors who are identified by KLB and involved in the development of manuscripts as per specifications set by the publisher. Such authors are selected on the strength of vast competence and experience in related subject areas, in addition to availability. Manuscripts generated thus enjoy automatic acceptance by the publisher subject to mandatory adjustments during processing and are known as solicited manuscripts.
  • Non-commissioned Authors

  • An author is considered non-commissioned if he/she writes out of own volition, without being contracted to do so by the publisher. Manuscripts received under this category, which by far form the majority, are subject to a three-month assessment by the publisher, an exercise which can culminate in either acceptance for publication or rejection and subsequent return to the author. These manuscripts are known as unsolicited manuscripts.
