Manuscript Submission

Manuscripts submitted to KLB for the first time should be accompanied by a covering letter outlining the following:


  1. Full introduction of the author, including titles and positions held in society (if any).
  2. Other publications (if any) by the same author, or relevant experience
  3. A synopsis of t he manuscript touching on:
    • Content.
    • Extent/scope.
    • Target audience.

The manuscript should be typed double-spaced on one side of paper only. Handwritten manuscripts are also acceptable-provided they are legible, well-spaced and written in permanent ink. The author is advised to retain a copy of his/her manuscript.

Manuscript assessment

Assessment may be conducted in-house (by the concerned editor) or by an external expert. Some of the key standards for assessment are as below:

  1. The organisation of the material whether it is sequential, logical and appropriate.
  2. Whether the language level is appropriate for the intended audience.
  3. Accuracy of facts and presentation.
  4. Originality. There should be no plagiarised material in the manuscript.
  5. Whether the manuscript, if published, will be likely to attract considerable market demand.
  6. The competition – the main titles in the market that the book will have to compete with.

For school books, the following points are crucial, in addition to the above:

  • Syllabus coverage.
  • Appeal to learners – whether the book will be attractive to them.
  • Sufficient and relevant exercises.
  • Coverage of topics – whether detailed or shallow.
